A MOBILE BARRIER

November 17 1989. A demonstration in Prague to mark International Students’ Day is violently put down by riot police. Shocked, citizens across Czechoslovakia light candles in protest. It’s the start of the Velvet Revolution – and the beginning of the end of the one-party Communist regime. Today, although the date is a public holiday, half of those who take the day off barely know why. So to show young Czechs what life was like behind the Iron Curtain, for one day mobile service provider 02 cut off their access to sites and domains outside the former Soviet bloc. Users were then given an option to traverse the border by finding out more about the events of 28 years ago. The campaign has recently been awarded by the Golden Drum, the Art Directors’ Club of Europe and the Epica Awards.
