Apptastic: Whiplr – The App That Brings 50 Shades To Your Love Life

whiplr-1

The 50 shades mania continues with the introduction of Whiplr – the app that lets your explore kinks and fetishes by connecting you to likeminded partners. Think of it like an S&M charged Tinder.

Makers describe it as a ‘messenger with kinks’ – letting you explore the world of kink and fetishes via text, voice and video chat with other ‘potential play partners’ with a view to exploring your deepest BDSM fantasies in real life.

Users simply create a profile with a picture and they can message people in their area without disclosing any private details, unless you choose to. You’re matched with people based on the “kinks” you select and can (hopefully) find “a safe and welcoming environment for the kink-curious to begin their journey.”

The main difference between this and apps like Tinder, Grindr and OkCupid is the types of personal information it asks for – not just hobbies and age, but also sexual kinks sorted into ten categories including ‘behaviour, fashion, objects and materials’, not to mention your sexuality on a sliding scale.

Whiplr CCO Daniel Sevitt has stated that “until now there has never been an app that is tailored to their needs and that can help experienced kinksters connect as well as provide a safe and welcoming environment for the kink curious to begin their journey” and the founders hope this app will allow people to be more open about what they want.

Ultimately, the phenomenon of 50 Shades is that it taps into something that was already happening, but not talked about openly, and brought it into the mainstream. But exploring those ‘kinks’ requires consenting partners and like-minded people. Enter Whiplr. It’s a promising idea for both experts and the uninitiated, if people sign up.
