SIGNS: leading the way to better integration for the hearing impaired

AI drives a revolutionary new way of learning sign language.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 466 million people worldwide are deaf or hard of hearing – and this number is expected to double by 2050. In the United States alone, the issue affects 3.6 million people. This significant and growing population requires better communication solutions.
With this in mind, technology company Nvidia and the American Society for Deaf Children, in collaboration with the creative studio Hello Monday/DEPT®, have developed SIGNS. It’s a platform that uses a 3D avatar to provide real-time interaction and feedback, making learning American Sign Language (ASL) fun and interactive. Experienced signers can contribute by adding their own videos, enriching the platform’s database. The collaborative approach, powered by artificial intelligence, aims to foster greater communication and, hopefully, lead to better integration for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
